Bathrooms tend to be one of the smallest rooms in the home, yet they’re one of the most important when it comes to designing and decorating. After a long day, you need somewhere peaceful and calm to relax, which is why it’s vital to create a bathroom that’s both spacious and relaxing. We’ve put together some of our top tips for making your bathroom look and feel bigger, no matter how small it is.

PALE SHADES

A great way to make your bathroom feel larger is to use light shades on the walls and floor, including on your chosen tiles. White tiles are perfect for making small spaces look and feel bigger. If you choose a tile with a gloss finish, you’ll also benefit from reflected light bouncing off the tiles and onto the walls, which creates a fresh and spacious feel in the room. Pale tiles are also perfect for creating a clean and fresh look, which is vital in a small space.

Another trick is to use large format tiles on your walls and floor. Their large surface areas are perfect for creating clean lines, which in turn creates a feel of space and continuity between surfaces. Combined with pale shades, larger tiles can work really well to create a bright open space which is ideal for small bathrooms. They’re also easy to maintain and go with almost any colour scheme if you decide to decorate again in the future.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Installing underfloor heating is another fantastic way of creating extra space and a feeling of luxury in your home. Controlled by a thermostat on the wall, you can set the temperature of the floor with the touch of a button, making your bathroom a relaxing retreat after a long day.

Underfloor heating gives you more freedom when it comes to designing your bathroom as you don’t have to leave space for a conventional radiator. This flexibility means you can move furniture round and utilise your wall space with whatever works best for you.

WET ROOMS

If you want to completely redesign your bathroom, why not think about creating a wet room? The space created from losing a bathtub creates a luxurious walk-in shower which is ideal for busy homes. Perfect for creating a seamless and spacious look, they’re also easy to maintain and keep clean.

For a really spacious look, use the same light-coloured tiles on the floor and walls. We’d recommend using tiles with anti-slip properties to ensure your bathroom is still safe to use even when wet. You could even incorporate underfloor heating for the ultimate luxury and keep your toes warm during the colder months.

STORAGE

When it comes to storage, a simple above the sink unit or open shelving works well. Try and resist putting furniture such as a cupboard or drawers on the floor as this will only clutter the room. By using the walls, you have more floor space and somewhere to put all your essentials. Try adding some on-trend accessories to make the room feel more homely.
