Key Benefits
What are Snow Melting Cables Designed For?
Warmup Snow Melting Cables are often used in concrete, asphalt driveways, and paved walkways. These cables work with electrical systems ranging from 208V to 277V and come in lengths ranging from 84ft to 500ft. These cables can be installed up to 4″ deep, either in a tire-track pattern or for complete coverage.
Suitable Coverings
Snow Melting Cables can be used with coverings such as pavers and related masonry, concrete pours, and asphalt with a base consisting of crushed gravel or sand. These applications have a minimum coverage of 2″ and a maximum coverage of 4″. Refer back to the installation manual for specific instructions for each application type.
How Do Snow Melting Cables Systems Work?
The controller in conjunction with an external sensor will monitor outdoor temperature and moisture levels. Once it detects snow or ice conditions, the system will activate to heat the slab. Electricity will pass through the embedded heating cables, generating heat that transfers to the surface above which melts accumulated snow and ice. As the slab warms, most of the melted snow will evaporate, leaving the surface clear and minimizing the risk of refreezing.
Power Requirements
Heating cable(s) spaced at 3” on center will output 50W/SF and heating cable(s) spaced at 4” on center will output 38W/SF. Warmup recommends a minimum of 38W/SF for snow melting applications.
240V & spool size ranges from 20SF to 122SF at 3” on center are in stock. 240V heating cable(s) can be de-rated using 208V however, will reduce the output by 25% (38W/SF). Warmup recommends a minimum of 38W/SF for snow melting applications. 208V, 277V, 480V, and 600V are all special order. Approximate lead times = 16 weeks.
3-Phase wiring may be suitable for your project – contact Warmup for details.
Should I Use Snow Melting Cables or Snow Melting Mats?
For Regularly Shaped Spaces
Square or rectangle-shaped spaces would qualify as a regularly shaped. For these areas, Warmup recommends the use of snow melting mats. Snow melting mats have heating cable pre-fixed on a mesh for quick installation of 50W/sqft.
For Irregular Shaped Spaces
Stairs or curved spaces would qualify as irregularly shaped. For these areas, Warmup recommends the use of snow melting cables. Snow melting cable options are supplied on a spool so that cable can be custom-laid. To get the same heat-output as the snow melting mat, the cable must be spaced at 3″.
